By Ken for UH

As a recent graduate of the Master of Public Administration program through the Maxine Goodman Levin College at Cleveland State University (CSU), Ken’s passion for good government was ignited. Affirmed through this program, his conviction that serving the public must focus on: efficiency, equity, effectiveness, and economy. In the office of Mayor, he intends to take these tenants to work for the residents of University Heights. In addition to schooling, Ken would bring over two decades of experience in municipal government to the position of Mayor. His broad experience has taken him from work at Rickenbacker Port Authority in Columbus, Ohio, to Rapid City, South Dakota, working there as an assistant department head for the City of Rapid City. He currently serves northeast Ohio as Airport Security Coordinator at the City of Cleveland’s Department of Port Control - assisting in the operation of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. His career history in airport administration is an excellent preparation for the position of Mayor. Airports have long been compared to cities, big and small. Within these “cities,” there are pavements to maintain and develop, upkeep with sanitary and storm sewer systems, working with various private developers, grant administration, and public safety roles. Ken and his wife Gwen moved to University Heights in 2010 and instantly fell in love with the mature landscape, cultural diversity, the municipal pool, and the small town atmosphere along with northeast Ohio amenities. Ken regularly volunteers with the Hunger Network’s Food Rescue Program, and serves on two project panels. One sponsored by the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) and another sponsored by the Program for Applied Research in Airport Security (PARAS). Ken is also facilitating Cleveland Airport System’s participation in an international outreach survey of workers to study human trafficking in the transportation industry sponsored by United Against Slavery. Ken Simmons would be truly honored to serve the residents of University Heights.
